Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 review

The UE Wonderboom 2 has a slightly redesigned design, improved bass performance, longer battery life and Outdoor Boost, making it an even better companion when you’re outdoors. Its durability, sound quality and performance make the Wonderboom 2 one of the best portable waterproof speakers you can buy.

The original UE Wonderboom has been at the top of our list of top waterproof speakers since its debut and for good reason: it is durable, reproduces louder than its miniature sound suggests, and can be connected to other UE Wonderboom speakers to enhance the sound.

Price and availability

A portable pint-sized speaker system can be purchased in the US and the UK at a suggested retail price of $ 99.99 / $ 89.99, as is the case with the original Wonderboom. In Australia, the Wonderboom 2 will be available from August for 129.95 Australian dollars. This is relatively cheap for a Bluetooth speaker, which usually costs between 70 and 150 dollars.

If you place the original Wonderboom next to Wonderboom 2, it will be difficult for you to specify a newer one. The only visual signs are the new Wonderboom color combinations and the new elastic strap – the speaker case, the buttons and the microUSB charging port remain unchanged.

At the top of the speaker are the power, pairing and playback buttons. On the front panel you will find large buttons for volume control. At the bottom of the speaker you will find the “Boost on the street” button, which further increases the volume in noisy environments. All buttons are membrane-type for waterproofing, which means they feel a little soft, but they are not difficult to control.

In terms of sound, the UE Wonderboom 2 is fantastic for its size. The speaker sounds much louder than you expect, especially with the “Boost” feature turned on. At maximum volume there is a little distortion, but if you keep it below 80%, the music sounds great.

Although Outdoor Boost does increase the overall volume, the sound quality drops noticeably when listening at low volume levels. With external amplification turned on at medium volume, the cymbals sound is sharper, and the mids are more pronounced, which is good, and there is a bit more bass in it than in the original Wonderboom, which helps bring a little heat to the sound without sacrificing high frequencies. The mids are excellent, the vocals sound natural and detailed.

In general, the UE Wonderboom 2 for $ 100 (£ 90 and $ 130) is still one of the best waterproof speakers you can buy – and our recommended option for those who want to bring their speaker to the beach or to the pool .
